To Do Or Not To Do?

As a recovering ‘doing’ addict, I have to be wary of how I spend my time and energy. When I have extra time, do I take advantage of it by squeezing in MORE? Or do I enjoy the empty space and the unfamiliar sensation of REST?

It’s easy to get caught in the ‘doing dilemma’ that resides in the space between necessity and excess. How do we choose what to do and what not to do?

Once I’m aware I have a choice — to do or not to do — I check in with myself by asking a few simple questions…

1) Where is this action or commitment coming from and does it feel like mine to do?

2) Will this activity fill my cup or empty it?

3) Does my calendar overall reflect a healthy balance of work, family time, rest, and play? Do I truly have space for it?

4) How important is this person or activity to my growth and the lifestyle I put so much effort into cultivating?

After spending some time with these questions I am able to decide with much greater certainty, whether or not to fill the space in my calendar or keep it open.

What methods do you have for saying no? How do you prioritize your health and well-being in a society that is obsessed with ‘doing’?
